I cannot tell you how much I stressed out over finding the perfect 1st anniversary present idea for my girlfriend. The funny thing is that she is not very sentimental. To be honest, she couldn't care less about what one year anniversary gift ideas I pick for her. Don't get me wrong, she loves when I pay attention to her.

She has a special Eau de Parfum made by FM Perfume that she really adores, so I made sure I purchased that but she is not one for ritual. She likes to spend time together, but she doesn't care if we do it in the formal, so-called correct way. An anniversary present, for her, is just like any other present. The whole point is to show each other the love that we feel.

Nonetheless, I spent a whole week thinking of nothing but anniversary gift ideas. I contemplated everything. I went to hallmark, I went to the bookstore, I went to the museum gift shop, and I even looked for online anniversary gift ideas. Everywhere I looked, however, seemed to give me something that wasn't quite right. Most of the anniversary gift ideas were pretty cliché. I wasn't going to get her a Hallmark greeting card, or a wooden plaque with a cheesy poem about how much our relationship means to me. I don't think she even likes jewellery, to be honest.

Finally, I realised that the only way I was going to be happy with her anniversary gift idea was to make it myself. I would not say that I am the best artist, but I do have some skill at putting things together. Most of the homemade anniversary gift ideas that I came up with were every bit as bad as the ones that I saw in stores. I thought about carving a sculpture of her or painting a picture of her, but I realised that I wouldn't be able to get it right. It would come across a silly and sentimental, as well as badly made.

Finally, I realise that none of the traditional anniversary gift ideas would work for me. Most anniversary gift ideas come across as trying too hard. The only thing to do was to make her something that she had always wanted. I decided to make her a new spice rack. I know that might sound silly, but she was overjoyed when she got it. It was hand made of good quality wood, well painted, well finished, and very attractive all around. She absolutely adored it.
